Collective phenomena in defect crystals

چکیده
We investigate the effects of interactions between substitutional defects on the properties of defect crystals at low temperatures, where defect motion is governed by quantum effects. Both thermal and dynamical properties are considered. The influence of interactions on defect motion is described via a collective effect. Our treatment is semiclassical in the sense that we analyze collective effects in a classical setting, and analyze the influence on quantized defect motion only thereafter. Our theory describes a crossover to glassy behavior at sufficiently high defect concentration. Our approach is meant to be general. For the sake of definiteness, we evaluate most of our results with parameters appropriate for Li-doped KCl crystals.

COMPUTATIONAL ENUMERATION OF POINT DEFECT CLUSTERS IN DOUBLE- LATTICE CRYSTALS
The cluster representation matrices have already been successfully used to enumerate close-packed vacancy clusters in all single-lattice crystals [I, 2]. Point defect clusters in double-lattice crystals may have identical geometry but are distinct due to unique atomic postions enclosing them. The method of representation matrices is extended to make it applicable to represent and enumerate ...
متن کاملEnhancement of the Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect in One- Dimensional Magnetophotonic Crystals with Adjustable Spatial Configuration
We studied magnetophotonic crystals (MPCs) with introduced magneticdefect layer sandwiched between magnetic and dielectric Bragg mirrors. Thesemagnetophotonic crystals have excellent capabilities to enhance reflection and Kerrrotation simultaneously. By adjusting spatial configuration such as repetition numbersof Bragg mirrors and thickness of magnetic defect layer, we a...
متن کاملPropagation of Electromagnetic Waves in the Core of a String Defect in Liquid Crystals
We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the core of a winding number one string defect with isotropic core in nematic liquid crystals. We numerically solve wave equations for the TE mode and show the existence of guided modes arising due to the variation of the refractive index as a function of the scalar order parameter. 1 Physics Department, University of Illinois at Urbana...
متن کاملErratum: Finite particle size drives defect-mediated domain structures in strongly confined colloidal liquid crystals
When liquid crystals are confined to finite volumes, the competition between the surface anchoring imposed by the boundaries and the intrinsic orientational symmetry-breaking of these materials gives rise to a host of intriguing phenomena involving topological defect structures. For synthetic molecular mesogens, like the ones used in liquid-crystal displays, these defect structures are independ...
متن کاملEmergent collective phenomena in a mixture of hard shapes through active rotation.
We investigate collective phenomena with rotationally driven spinners of concave shape. Each spinner experiences a constant internal torque in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Although the spinners are modeled as hard, otherwise noninteracting rigid bodies, their active motion induces an effective interaction that favors rotation in the same direction. With increasing density a...
